Seven Haiku (Tiny Songs)
It’s long seemed to me that haiku are like tiny songs -- one breath in, one breath out – and small moments held between.
This winter’s moon
somehow trapped below
the ledges of the ice
**
I once knew a child
who’d rather been born a river
and lived inside me
**
Astilla de luna en mi
ventana—como un recuerdo
la memoria crece
Sliver of moon
in my window—as a memory
memory grows
**
Tarot reader
places her table just beyond
the museum doors
**
Bebé que ries detrás de mi—
aprendiendo tu lengua—
llévame allí
Baby laughing behind me—
learning your language—
take me there
**
Before you, there was your name
wandering my tongue
as beautiful rain
**
Midnight under the apple tree—
the moon tries on
some whispering slippers
