EXXON Knew – A Comeuppance
This song asks one question: why has it been so hard to hold oil companies accountable for that they did 30+ yrs ago to deny what they knew would happen to the earth from their growing wealth?
Exxon knew, Exxon knew –
What else were they going to do?
Open the books & speak the truth
That Exxon knew what Exxon knew?
Exxon knew, Exxon knew
What their drills were going to do
Heat the earth with endless spew
Of more methane and Co2
BP too, BP still
Knew that they would never spill
What their offshore wells would kill
Oyster beds and strands of krill
Exxon knew, Exxon knew
Perched upon their private view
They fanned the fires as they grew
Smokescreens between me and you
Exxon knew, Exxon knew –
What else were they going to do?
Send Billions to the very few
Who knew what Exxon knew it knew
Exxon knew, Exxon knew
Let them pay for what they do
How they made us into fools
Bring them to the court of truth
Turn from all the addict fuels
Turn their wealth toward something new
Give the earth its ancient due
Live what we always knew we knew
(Live as we always knew)
