Lessons from the Underground

How do we protest the arrest of so many innocent people across our country, resembling the crackdown of fierce dictatorships across the last century – & now this one? At least we can bring their stories and names into our minds & hearts.

Lessons from the underground

     (underground / underground)

Where our nameless names are found

Chorus: Who on the street

Who in the field

Struck off their feet

Flung down to kneel

With their dreams of the USA

As a place of possibility

Artemis Ghasemzadeh [Gasemzaday]

Dreamed that she could find a way

Where she could step out of fear

Just for letting loose her hair

Thought that Christians would be kind

Lit a candle at her shrine

Tossed into a jungle camp

With no hope of coming back

Artemis Ghasemzadeh

Say her name from where she lays

Who is left to blame?     [Chorus]

Ksenila Petrova  [Kaysenia]

Protested Putin’s war

Escaped their reign escaped their jaws

Brought her science eye to range

Genes that salve the pain of age

Brought across frog embryos

Which she didn’t bother to claim

For which ‘crime’ she was detained

Thrown into prison to teach her a lesson

Never to break a single sanction

Even if it hurts no one

Look again at what we’ve done

Months she’s waited in her cell

With hundreds more and who can tell

What their nameless names contain

Stories, lives now all the same

Ksenilla Petrova / Ksenilla Petrova

Say her name from where she lies

Look her in the eye

Narciso Barranco

Doing his job, trimming the grounds

Why was he chosen why was he chased

Why was he beaten brutally erased

How did he hurt us what was his crime

When will we stop this

Isn’t it time

To shake this nation

Say who we are

This desecration can’t keep going on

Narciso Barranco Narciso Barranco

Speak his name/ Where he lays

Beaten on the ground

And driven away

What is there left to say?

Narciso Barranco / Artemis Ghasemzadeh

Ksenila Petrova

So many others / wherever they are

Say their names say their names

Bring this nation its shame

Same their names wherever they are

Gotta stop this war!
